Major Events-1997

(1) India and Bangladesh formally starting  the Ganga waters with a treaty between the two countries (Jan 1).

(2) Kofi Annan,58 years old Ghanian,was elected to the prestigious  post of U.N.Secretary.General Boutros Ghali became the first Secretary General to be denied a second term .Mr.Annan is the first black African top head the organisation (Jan 1).

(3) Indo-pak Summit was held at Mahe. I.K.Gujral and Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif tried to remove outstanding differences between the two countries (Jan 3). (4) Jabalpur  in Central India was hit by a massive earthquakes that registered an intensity of 6 on the Richter Scale.The earthwquakes caused over 40 deaths,left over 1000 injured and about 60% buildings of the city damaged (May 22). (5) Tanshi Tenzing,grndson of Tenzing Norgay,climbed Mt.Everest (8,848 Mts.),replicating his grandfather's achivement along with Edmund Hillary on 29th May 1953 (May 29). (6) Successful launch of INSAT-2D from Kourou in the French Guyana (June 4). (7) FPB-World's first fingerprint bureau established on june 21,1897 at the Writer's building in Calcutta completed 100 years ! (June ,21).(8) China took over the reins of Hong kong from the British (June 30). (9) K.R.Narayanan was elected 10th President of the Republic of India (July 17).(10) Mother Therasa, Nobel Peace Laureate,Mother of the Gutters died at calcutta (Sept 5). (11) G-15 Summit held in Kulalampur in Malaysia (Nov 3-5). (12) Kalpana Chowla,first Indian woman launched in the space-NASA-USA (Dec 4).(13) 125 Nations sign a pact to ban landmines (Dec 4).(14) President dissolved Lok Sabha (Dec 4).
